Burkina Faso’s security forces have dealt a significant blow to terrorist operations in the east of the country, neutralizing more than 100 militants during a major attack on their Foutouri detachment on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. Among those killed were two senior terrorist leaders, Abou Souleymane and Abdoul Bâdre.
According to official reports, approximately 600 insurgents launched successive assaults on the military base, aiming to overwhelm the defenders and seize control.
However, the attackers were met with swift and coordinated resistance from the Combatant Forces.
Early in the counteroffensive, troops successfully intercepted and destroyed a suicide drone carrying explosives. Confronted with well-prepared defenders and the loss of their unmanned weapon, the militants’ morale quickly faltered.
Security forces maintained sustained firepower, ultimately neutralizing around 100 terrorists and wounding an additional 100.
The operation also led to the seizure of significant weaponry, including assault rifles, PKM machine guns, and motorcycles, depriving the insurgents of critical resources for future attacks.
Intelligence sources confirmed that two high-profile terrorist leaders were among those killed. Abdoul Bâdre, described as a Koranic master, was responsible for indoctrinating recruits and conducting ritual practices tied to militant operations.
Abou Souleymane, a key figure within the terrorist hierarchy, oversaw hostage releases, resource management, and strategic authorizations for insurgent movements.
“The Battle of Foutouri confirms the determination of our forces to reclaim national territory and restore peace, security, and social cohesion,” stated a military spokesperson.
This latest success underscores Burkina Faso’s ongoing efforts to counter terrorism, disrupt extremist networks, and stabilise regions long affected by insurgent violence.
Observers note that eliminating senior militant leaders could significantly weaken operational capabilities and limit the capacity for coordinated attacks in the eastern provinces.
The victory at Foutouri is hailed as a major milestone in Burkina Faso’s counter-terrorism campaign, reflecting both the resilience of national forces and the continued commitment to protecting civilians from extremist threats.
