Truck drivers in Boa Vista have issued a stark warning over the deteriorating condition of the access road to the city’s industrial zone and port, describing it as a longstanding problem that has caused serious losses and vehicle damage.
Speaking on behalf of the group, businessman and truck driver Enrique Ribeiro criticised the road’s “dirt, full of stones” condition, noting that it has been in disrepair for around 30 years, since the port’s construction.
“We have been paying taxes here in Boa Vista, and we don’t have decent access,” Ribeiro said, highlighting the financial and operational toll on transporters.
Drivers pointed out that modern trucks, many equipped with sensitive electronic systems, are particularly vulnerable to poor road conditions and water damage.
Ribeiro described frequent breakdowns, including “burst wheels,” as routine occurrences that underscore the urgent need for repairs.
The group also raised safety concerns, arguing that the road poses risks not only to drivers but also to heavy cargo and other travellers in the area.
Ribeiro criticised the apparent lack of oversight, questioning why tax payments are collected without corresponding investment in essential infrastructure.
“This is not just a matter of convenience; it is a question of dignity and safety for everyone who depends on the transportation of goods,” Ribeiro added. He called on authorities to address the “serious problem” affecting the industrial zone, which he described as being filled with “water, rubble and rocks.”
In addition to the road issues, the truckers urged fuel companies to improve service stations along key transport routes.
They suggested the creation of a new station in Rabil to decentralise fuel access and better accommodate the needs of heavy vehicle traffic.
The appeal underscores growing frustration among transporters in Boa Vista, who argue that investment in infrastructure is essential to support economic activity and ensure safe and efficient movement of goods through the city’s vital industrial corridor.
