The National Agency for Land and Property (ANDF) in Benin has issued a stern warning after fake documents announcing the sale of land plots began circulating on social media.
Since the morning of September 25, a press release and accompanying price list, dated September 21 and purportedly signed by the ANDF Director General, falsely claimed that plots were available for sale in Porto-Novo, Cotonou, and Parakou.
In an official statement, the agency described the documents as “gross forgeries” and cautioned the public against falling victim to what it termed “a grotesque trap” set by unscrupulous individuals.
“The National Agency for Land and Property does not have a real estate development mission. It is not involved in land trading or intermediation for land and real estate transactions,” the statement emphasized.
Authorities confirmed that measures are underway to identify those responsible and bring them before the competent courts. The ANDF also sought to reassure citizens that its official role is unrelated to land sales, aiming to dispel any confusion caused by the fraudulent materials.
The warning highlights growing concerns in Benin over online scams and fraudulent real estate schemes, which can target unsuspecting buyers with falsified documents and misleading offers. Citizens are urged to verify any land sale claims with official authorities and exercise extreme caution when dealing with property transactions.
With this clarification, the ANDF reinforced its mission to manage land administration matters responsibly, stressing that the circulation of such false documents undermines public trust and endangers those unaware of the forgery.
