A quiet night in the rural village of Kassarou, located in Bouanri district within the commune of Bembéréké, was shattered in the early hours of Sunday, July 6, when a violent armed robbery left residents shaken and a local couple robbed of more than 15 million CFA francs.
According to details reported by Canal3 Benin, the attack occurred around 1 a.m.
when a group of seven masked and heavily armed men descended on the couple’s home.
Eyewitnesses and local sources confirmed that the assailants fired multiple gunshots into the air to instil fear and chaos before storming the residence.
The assailants reportedly demanded cash at gunpoint. Under duress, the couple complied—handing over a substantial sum of money kept in the house.
The woman was holding 15 million CFA francs, while her husband was forced to give up 500,000 CFA francs.
No further injuries were reported, but the psychological toll on the victims and surrounding community remains significant.
Residents of Kassarou have expressed concern over growing insecurity in the area, calling for urgent intervention from law enforcement authorities.
The scale and coordination of the attack have raised fears about the presence of organized criminal networks operating in the region.
Local police have launched an investigation into the robbery and are urging anyone with information to come forward. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the identities of the assailants remain unknown.
The incident adds to a growing list of armed assaults in northern Benin, where rural areas with limited security infrastructure have become increasingly vulnerable to violent crime.
For the affected family and their neighbours, the night of July 6 will be remembered not for its silence, but for the echoes of gunfire and the trauma left in its wake.
