Benin’s Progressive Union for Renewal (UPR) has formally welcomed Romuald Wadagni, the designated presidential candidate for the April 2026 election, signaling broadening support for his political campaign.
The event, held on September 2, 2025, at the party’s national headquarters, followed his visit to the Republican Bloc (BR) the previous day and marked an important step in consolidating his political base.
President Joseph Fifamin Djogbénou, accompanied by members of the National Executive Directorate (DEN), received Wadagni with a warm and symbolic ceremony.
The occasion coincided with the fourth anniversary of the death of Dr. Nestor Wadagni, Romuald’s father and a founding member of the UPR. A minute of silence was observed in his memory.
“You are the key to the success of the reform of the party system. And with you at your side, in support, we assure you that nothing will be held back so that you can succeed in this field,” Djogbénou declared, reaffirming the party’s full backing for Wadagni.
The UPR leader also invoked the founding spirit and legacy of figures such as Bruno Amoussou, Kolawolé Idji, Mathurin Coffi Nago, and Abraham Zinzindohoué. He described the party as the “government’s security belt,” which Wadagni is poised to lead in the event of electoral victory.
This reception underscores the early momentum behind Wadagni’s campaign.
The political tour, which began with his visit to the Republican Bloc headquarters, positions the Minister of State for the Economy and Finance as a central figure in the upcoming election.
Accompanied by Abdoulaye Bio Tchané, Minister of State for Development and Coordination of Government Action, and other government officials, Wadagni’s engagements highlight a strategic effort to unify support from key political factions.
Observers note that the dual visits signal an emerging campaign infrastructure and a deliberate effort to consolidate both party loyalists and broader political allies.
As the 2026 election approaches, these early demonstrations of unity and mobilization may prove crucial in shaping voter perceptions and building momentum for Wadagni’s candidacy.
With UPR support secured and cross-party outreach underway, Romuald Wadagni is rapidly establishing himself as a central figure in Benin’s political landscape, reinforcing his image as a candidate of continuity, reform, and strategic consensus.
