As Benin prepares for its 2026 general elections, the Directorate General of Taxes (DGI) has announced that all prospective candidates must present a valid tax clearance certificate to submit their candidacy.
The announcement comes amid efforts to ensure transparency and compliance with national fiscal obligations.
In an official press release, the DGI clarified that requests for tax clearance can only be made online through the dedicated platform at https://quitus.impots.bj.
The digital procedure is designed to certify that each candidate for elected office is fully up to date with their tax responsibilities, streamlining the verification process for both the authorities and applicants.
To obtain the certificate, candidates must meet several requirements. They must be current with property taxes, including built and unbuilt property as well as property income tax, motor vehicle tax (TVM), professional taxes, business taxes, and income tax. Employees are also required to attach a pay slip issued within the past three months to complete the process.
The DGI stressed that no candidacy file will be accepted without the submission of a proper tax clearance, underscoring the importance of fiscal compliance for public office aspirants. Authorities have encouraged potential candidates to begin the online process promptly to avoid delays and ensure eligibility ahead of the elections.
This measure reflects Benin’s broader commitment to good governance and financial accountability, reinforcing the principle that those seeking to serve in public office must uphold the same standards of responsibility and transparency expected of all citizens. By leveraging digital platforms, the government aims to make the process more efficient while maintaining rigorous oversight of electoral requirements.
With the 2026 elections approaching, candidates are urged to prioritise the completion of their tax clearance requests to meet the regulatory deadline and secure their participation in the democratic process.
