The Ministry of the Interior and Public Security has issued a stern warning against the reoccupation of public spaces in cities across the country, citing a resurgence of practices that disrupt urban order and sanitation.
In a statement released on August 19, 2025, the ministry highlighted that sidewalks and previously cleared areas are being reclaimed by individuals, creating obstacles for pedestrians and vehicles.
The phenomenon is exacerbated by the uncontrolled circulation of hand-operated vehicles, including rickshaws and wheelbarrows, which not only block roads but are sometimes used to display prohibited goods.
Authorities also drew attention to the display of used tires along major streets, a practice contributing to pollution.
Combined with the proliferation of street vendors, stray animals, and makeshift open-air urinals, these actions are seen as threats to public safety, health, and the overall order of urban spaces.
To counter these abuses, the Minister of the Interior has ordered the Republican Police to coordinate with relevant agencies in systematic operations.
These include the removal of hand-operated vehicles and tires, regulation of street vending, and measures to curb environmental hazards.
The ministry’s press release also reminded owners of shops, boutiques, and bars that occupying sidewalks and public areas without authorization will result in sanctions.
The straying of domestic animals in urban centres remains strictly prohibited.
“The public is called upon to cooperate with the Republican Police to ensure respect for public order in all its dimensions,” the statement emphasized.
This renewed enforcement drive reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining urban hygiene, safety, and the functionality of public spaces, responding to growing complaints from citizens about the encroachment on roads, sidewalks, and communal areas.
Observers note that the campaign is also intended to reinforce civic discipline and prevent environmental degradation in major cities.
