From Paris, former Beninese President Nicéphore Dieudonné Soglo has voiced his support for Romuald Wadagni, recently designated as the candidate of the ruling movement for the April 2026 presidential election.
Speaking on Sunday, August 31, to the daily newspaper L’Événement Précis, Soglo, currently in Paris for a health check-up, praised Wadagni’s selection and offered his encouragement.
“I congratulate him. This will allow us to continue the work that Talon began with the new Minister of Economy and Finance, who found the resources that allowed the country to modernize.
With joy and encouragement, and especially outside of Bio Tchané, he seemed the most qualified to continue Talon’s work,” Soglo said.
The former president also extended his congratulations to the people of Benin, highlighting the significance of the appointment for the younger generation.
He described Wadagni’s career as a testament to the dynamism of emerging leaders capable of sustaining the country’s recent economic achievements.
“This is the result of the dynamism of the young Minister of Finance, whose know-how has enabled the performance of the Beninese economy,” Soglo added.
The endorsement from Nicéphore Soglo strengthens the legitimacy of Wadagni’s candidacy as he embarks on his first public appearances following the ruling movement’s announcement.
Analysts suggest that the backing of a respected former president could bolster confidence in Wadagni’s capacity to carry forward the economic policies initiated by the current administration.
As Benin prepares for the 2026 election, the focus now shifts to how Wadagni will consolidate support both within the ruling movement and among the electorate, ensuring continuity in economic governance while appealing to a new generation of voters.
