Benin rises to the top of African 3×3 basketball rankings in historic FIBA milestone

Benin has achieved a landmark moment in its sporting history, emerging as the top-ranked African nation in FIBA’s latest 3×3 basketball standings.
Published on June 13, 2025, the new rankings place Benin at the summit of the continent and 26th globally—a monumental leap that reflects the country’s strategic investment in the fast-growing sport.
The announcement comes on the heels of Benin hosting two major international tournaments in Porto-Novo: the FIBA 3×3 Lite Quest for senior men (May 30 to June 1) and the U23 Nation League for both men and women (June 3 to 9).
These competitions not only showcased Benin’s organizational capability but also the rising talent within its national teams.
With a combined score of 462,947 points, Benin now outpaces traditional regional powerhouses Algeria (453,291 points) and Uganda (451,459 points), cementing its status as the new force in African 3×3 basketball.
On the individual team level, the women’s squad—dubbed the Amazons—rank second in Africa and 27th worldwide, while the men’s team, known as the Cheetahs, also hold the second spot on the continent and sit 30th globally.
This unprecedented success is the result of a coordinated effort between the Benin Basketball Federation and the Ministry of Sports, who have implemented a deliberate policy to increase participation in FIBA-sanctioned tournaments.
Given that FIBA 3×3 rankings are determined by active player involvement and official tournament results, consistent international exposure has become a cornerstone of Benin’s strategy.
More than a statistical milestone, Benin’s new ranking opens doors to prestigious global events such as the FIBA 3×3 World Cup and potentially the Olympic Games.
With momentum on its side, Benin is now setting the pace for African 3×3 basketball—driven by discipline, emerging talent, and a clear vision for sporting excellence.
