Authorities in Benin have apprehended three individuals suspected of stealing a motorcycle in the Gbanlin district of Ouèssè commune.
The arrests followed a report filed on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.
According to police sources, a tip-off alerted the Gbanlin police station to the presence of two men in Botti village, Laminou district.
Officers were promptly dispatched and detained the suspects while in possession of a black BAJAJ motorcycle without a registration number.
During questioning, the accused admitted to stealing the vehicle in the early hours of August 18, around 2 a.m., from a residence in Djègbé. Their confessions led authorities to identify and arrest a third accomplice, who confirmed his involvement in the theft.
“All three suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue,” a police spokesperson said.
“The inquiry will determine the precise circumstances of the offence and assist in locating the motorcycle’s rightful owner.”
The incident highlights ongoing concerns over vehicle theft in Benin, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where law enforcement presence is limited.
Local authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity promptly.
The Republican Police have reassured the public that measures are being strengthened to combat theft and improve the safety of personal property.
Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing, and the suspects could face formal charges once the inquiry is completed.
The Ouèssè case underscores the broader challenges faced by Benin’s security services in addressing property crimes and ensuring swift justice for affected citizens.
