Benin mourns the passing of Raïssa Gbédji, veteran journalist and advocate for women’s rights

The media landscape in Benin and across Francophone Africa is in mourning following the death of renowned journalist and communicator Raïssa Gbédji, who passed away on the morning of Saturday, June 21, 2025, after a short illness. She was 52.
Widely respected for her voice, intellect, and unwavering advocacy, Gbédji’s career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on journalism, women’s empowerment, and the arts.
Her professional journey began in the secretarial field, but she soon transitioned into communications, a field where her voice and convictions found their true expression.
She joined Golfe FM, one of Benin’s pioneering private radio stations, as a news presenter.
By 2005, she had risen to become editor-in-chief at Océan FM, before taking on a prestigious role as a correspondent for Radio France Internationale (RFI) at its Africa desk in Cotonou.
In a landscape often dominated by men, Gbédji carved out a distinct place for herself—not just as a journalist but as a forceful advocate for gender equality.
She was admired for using her platform to highlight issues affecting women, amplifying voices that too often went unheard.
Beyond journalism, Gbédji was a celebrated artist.
Her musical talent and collaborations with some of Benin’s most iconic musicians—including Janvier Dénagan, Sagbohan Danialou, Jolidon Lafia, the Koud’akoll brothers, Gilles Louèkè, and Rock Quenum—cemented her status as a cultural figure of national importance.
Her voice resonated not just through airwaves, but through melodies that bridged generations.
Colleagues and listeners alike have expressed their sorrow, remembering her as a bold, articulate, and generous spirit who brought clarity to complex issues and joy through her music.
Raïssa Gbédji leaves behind a legacy of integrity, courage, and cultural pride.
Her passing is a profound loss not only for Benin’s media and arts communities but for all who believe in the power of words, song, and conviction.
