Benin has announced legal measures against individuals responsible for offensive remarks aimed at Gabonese authorities, amid rising tensions on social media between citizens of the two countries.
Porto-Novo has invoked the Digital Code as the legal basis for prosecution, signaling its intent to protect diplomatic relations and uphold mutual respect.
Authorities have expressed concern over weeks of verbal exchanges online, in which activists from both countries insulted and defamed each other, sometimes targeting the heads of state directly.
The escalation drew official attention after a meeting on Wednesday between Gabonese Foreign Minister Régis Onanga Ndiaye and Benin’s Honorary Consul in Gabon, Dr. Yessoufou Maroya.
In its statement, Beninese officials made clear that such behavior would no longer be tolerated.
“In accordance with the Digital Code, anyone making insulting remarks or inciting hatred against the Gabonese authorities will be prosecuted,” the statement read. The provision aims both to safeguard Benin’s image and to preserve the historically strong relations between the two nations.
The announcement follows criticism from Gabon’s foreign ministry regarding perceived inaction by Benin in response to attacks on President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
Porto-Novo’s firm stance sends a clear message: social media is not a lawless space.
Beyond the threat of legal action, the Beninese government stressed the bonds of fraternity that unite the two peoples, urging citizens to engage online with peace, tolerance, and responsibility.
Authorities also reassured Gabonese nationals in Benin of their protection, while Gabon guarantees the safety of Beninese living on its territory.
This move reflects a broader trend in Africa toward using national legislation to regulate online speech and safeguard diplomatic ties. In Gabon, similar laws carry penalties of up to five years in prison for spreading false information or misleading claims.
As tensions simmer online, citizens and activists on both sides are now under notice: words have consequences, and legal accountability will follow.
