
Benin bid farewell to Emmanuel Golou on Saturday, September 20, 2025, as the former Second Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council (ESC) was laid to rest in his native village of Golohoué, in the Lanta district of Klouékanmey commune.
The former president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) passed away on September 2, 2025, at the age of 70, drawing political and institutional leaders from across the country to his funeral.
The ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including the President of the National Assembly, Louis Vlavonou, ESC President Conrad Gbaguidi, Minister of Economy and Finance Romuald Wadagni, Minister of Foreign Affairs Olushegun Bakari Adjadi, and Minister of Justice Yvon Détchénou.
Speaking on behalf of the ESC, Conrad Gbaguidi paid tribute to Golou as “a man whose loyalty, wisdom and commitment will remain forever engraved in hearts,” highlighting a career defined by integrity and dedication to national service.
A former member of parliament, Emmanuel Golou was appointed by the National Assembly to the ESC, where he served as Second Vice-President. Known for his skills in listening and mediation, he played a central role in Benin’s political life, championing dialogue and compromise in pursuit of social cohesion.
Medical sources reported that Golou had been receiving treatment at the Hubert Koutoukou Maga National University Hospital Center (CNHU-HKM) in Cotonou prior to his death. His passing marks the loss of a key political figure whose contributions were integral to Benin’s development and efforts to strengthen social unity.
The funeral brought together family, colleagues, and citizens alike, reflecting the deep respect Golou commanded across political lines. His life and career are remembered as a testament to dedication, civic responsibility, and the pursuit of consensus in Benin’s evolving political landscape.
