The Beninese government has appealed for restraint on social media, following rising tensions linked to Beninese nationals living in Gabon. The appeal comes after a controversy erupted online regarding the status of Beninese traders in the province of Lambaréné.
In an official statement released Monday, authorities in Cotonou emphasized “the excellent cooperation relations” between Benin and Gabon. The statement reassured that Beninese nationals residing in Gabon continue to benefit from the goodwill and support of local authorities.
Cotonou stressed its commitment to working with Libreville to strengthen bilateral ties “in a healthy and mutually beneficial climate,” underscoring the importance of maintaining cordial relations between the two countries.
The government’s latest statement follows an earlier announcement on August 14, when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern over threats and intimidation directed at Beninese citizens in Lambaréné, reportedly linked to the allocation of market spaces.
At that time, Benin announced plans to organize an identification and census mission to facilitate the possible voluntary return of certain nationals, if desired.
By reaffirming its respect for state sovereignty and its adherence to Pan-Africanist principles, Cotonou called on both populations to exercise solidarity and restraint.
The government stressed that social media disputes should not escalate into real-world tensions and urged citizens to engage in dialogue and brotherhood.
