The government of Benin has called for restraint amid rising online disputes between Beninese and Gabonese citizens over market access and recent restrictions targeting foreigners in Gabon.
Tensions flared after disagreements surrounding the treatment of Beninese nationals in Lambaréné, where foreign traders have faced new economic restrictions.
In recent days, the issue has sparked heated debates across social media platforms, with exchanges between internet users from both countries turning increasingly hostile.
Authorities in Cotonou expressed concern over the tone of the discussions, warning that the use of “discourteous remarks” risked undermining relations between the two nations.
In a press release issued on 18 August, the Beninese government appealed to citizens of both countries to adopt a spirit of respect and solidarity in their online interactions.
“Benin and Gabon maintain excellent cooperative relations,” the statement read, stressing that nationals from both sides continue to enjoy goodwill from their respective governments.
It further reassured Beninese citizens living in Gabon that this principle remains unchanged.
The government also reiterated its earlier commitment, announced on 14 August, to dispatch a mission tasked with identifying and registering Beninese citizens who may wish to voluntarily return home.
Officials said this measure was aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of nationals, while reinforcing dialogue with Gabonese authorities.
“The executive will continue, in conjunction with the Gabonese government, efforts to preserve a peaceful and beneficial climate for both peoples,” the statement concluded.
Despite the online disputes, Cotonou emphasised that the broader relationship between the two countries remains strong, underpinned by cooperation and mutual respect. The government’s latest appeal seeks to prevent the digital clashes from spilling over into wider diplomatic or social tensions.
As both nations navigate the issue, the emphasis remains on maintaining brotherhood, dialogue, and a stable environment for their citizens.
