The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENA) of Benin has officially announced the five duos vying for the country’s presidential election scheduled for April 12, 2026.
The publication, released on Wednesday, sets the stage for a highly competitive race six months ahead of voting day.
Leading the list is the ruling coalition’s duo of Kossi Mbueke Romuald Wadagni, a chartered accountant, and Mariam Chabi Talata, an inspector of secondary education.
Wadagni heads the ticket, reflecting continuity from the current administration and its political agenda.
The main opposition party, Les Démocrates, has nominated the tandem of Vigilé Renaud Léandre N’doufou Agbodjo, a practising lawyer, and Jude Bonaventure Lodjou, a jurist, signaling a concerted challenge to the ruling bloc. Observers expect this pairing to mobilise the party’s base amid internal debates over candidate selection and party unity.
Three additional duos have also filed their candidacies: Anatole Jackson Prince Ouinsavi with Remilekoun Agathe Bello, Paul Hounkpè paired with Rock Judicael Hounwanou, and Elisabeth Agbossaga, also known as Jawad, with Boni Neto Gansare. These candidates represent a mix of political parties and independent movements, highlighting the growing diversity of voices seeking to influence Benin’s political landscape.
CENA’s announcement formalises the start of the electoral process, including candidate verification and campaign preparations. Analysts note that the early publication of candidate lists allows parties to consolidate support and engage in nationwide outreach ahead of the April vote.
With just half a year remaining before polling stations open, the spotlight now turns to voter engagement, campaign strategies, and how these five duos will navigate Benin’s dynamic and sometimes fractious political environment. The election promises to be a decisive moment for the West African nation, as citizens weigh continuity against the promise of change.
