At the heart of Benin’s 65th independence anniversary celebrations in Cotonou, Franco-Guadeloupean host and cultural activist Claudy Siar took centre stage, marking a poignant moment in his personal and professional journey.
Invited by President Patrice Talon, Siar sat alongside the head of state at the Place de l’Amazone, witnessing the military and civil parade that symbolised national pride and resilience.
A leading voice in the African diaspora for over three decades, Siar described the occasion as “one of the happiest days of my life,” highlighting the deep emotional significance of the moment.
“I’m here, on the land of my ancestors. I took my DNA test, I know my origins. And in a few hours, I will receive Beninese nationality.”
These words encapsulate a powerful fusion of personal heritage and political symbolism, underscoring his connection to Benin’s evolving identity.
Siar, known for his pan-Africanist convictions, lauded Benin’s transformation—not merely through infrastructure but more importantly, through a shift in collective mindset.
“Evolution, for me, is not only infrastructure; it is above all the transformation of mentalities, the renewed confidence among the Beninese to say that the world belongs to them,” he said, highlighting a renewed sense of pride resonating with his lifelong activism.
Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with President Talon, whom he has known for over twenty years, Siar praised the Beninese leader’s republican discipline and fairness.
“He could have asked me for or granted me privileges. He never did. This is proof that he governs with fairness,” Siar noted, portraying Talon’s leadership as grounded in principle and modesty.
With Talon’s steadfast refusal to seek a third term, Siar views this decision as a beacon of democratic integrity in a region often challenged by power retention.
“He is a man who respects the rules. His choice not to cling to power is a powerful tribute to democracy,” he said.
Closing his tribute, Siar hailed the president as “the president of all Beninese, for a prosperous Benin,” encapsulating a vision of unity and progress that has defined both the man and the nation.
