Benin’s political landscape is stirring ahead of the 2026 presidential election, as influential party member Nourou Dine Saka Saley (NDSS) publicly endorsed the Democrats (LD) party’s recently nominated presidential ticket and paid tribute to one of its most respected figures, Honorable Éric Houndété.
Speaking on TikTok on 14 October 2025, NDSS praised the selection of Me Renaud Agbodjo and his running mate Bonaventure Judes Lodjou, describing the duo as “born in the opposition and of the opposition,” and urging party members to rally behind their candidacy.
“For me, we must support this choice which systematically contrasts with the power in place,” NDSS said, highlighting the democratic process within the LD party.
“By its designation process, the LD party shows that from now on, a group of people will no longer choose the people who will lead our country.”
In his video statement, NDSS also paid homage to the political career of Honorable Houndété, announcing his intention to award the parliamentarian the “Palm of Merit” for his unwavering commitment and leadership.
“I particularly want to award the Palm of Merit to the Honorable Éric Houndété. He is an elder for whom I have great regard and respect,” NDSS declared.
“His political combativeness, his commitment and his leadership deserve to be recognized.”
NDSS emphasized that Houndété’s contributions have been central to establishing the legitimacy and vitality of the LD party, describing him as “a model of combativeness and political commitment.” By publicly honoring Houndété immediately after the presidential ticket announcement, NDSS sought to reinforce party unity and cohesion at a critical moment in the electoral cycle.
The endorsement and tribute reflect a deliberate strategy to consolidate support within the party and present a united front against rivals in the upcoming elections. Analysts note that such gestures of recognition are key to rallying both party members and the electorate around a shared vision.
As Benin gears up for the 2026 presidential vote, the LD party’s internal solidarity, exemplified by NDSS’s public remarks, signals its determination to compete vigorously in a political landscape increasingly defined by opposition-driven campaigns.
