On 6 September 2024, on the sidelines of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC 2024) in Beijing, Benin’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Olushegun Adjadi Bakary, and his Nigerien counterpart, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, engaged in a bilateral meeting aimed at deepening cooperation between the two West African nations.
The discussions focused on key issues, including the normalization of diplomatic relations and pressing security challenges affecting the region.
Commitment to Normalization and Diplomatic Exchanges
A significant highlight of the meeting was the progress made towards normalizing relations between Benin and Niger, driven by the leadership of their respective heads of state.
Both ministers expressed satisfaction with the recent diplomatic exchanges, such as the presentation of credentials by Benin’s new ambassador to Niger, Gildas Agonkan, on 6 August 2024.
They also agreed to schedule the second session of the Niger-Benin Joint Cooperation Commission, marking a continued commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties.
Security Concerns and Border Reopening Delays
Security was a major point of concern during the discussions.
The Nigerien delegation expressed its apprehension over ongoing security threats that have hindered the reopening of the border between the two countries.
In response, Benin reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate closely with Nigerien authorities to expedite the resumption of cross-border exchanges while enhancing mutual trust.
This collaboration is seen as vital for the stabilization of the region and the fostering of stronger economic and social ties between the neighboring nations.
Future Engagements and Continued Dialogue
Both parties emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue between their respective authorities to address these challenges.
They also agreed on a follow-up meeting to be held in New York during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, where they will continue to explore avenues for cooperation and address security concerns.
The meeting underscores the determination of Benin and Niger to overcome obstacles and work towards a more robust partnership, highlighting the critical role of diplomacy and mutual support in addressing the complex issues facing the region.
