The UNITA Parliamentary Group has called for a broad and transparent national dialogue on the ongoing revision of Angola’s electoral laws, underscoring the process as a crucial step in strengthening the country’s democratic and legal foundations.
In a statement issued on Monday, 21 July 2025, UNITA stressed that reviewing the Electoral Legislative Package must be treated as a matter of national priority.
The party urged civil society, religious organizations, and social partners to closely follow the discussions taking place in the National Assembly through media outlets and digital platforms.
Given the profound implications of the proposed legal changes, UNITA insists the Assembly should first consult widely with civil society groups to incorporate diverse perspectives. This approach, the party says, will help ensure the laws become more equitable, inclusive, and aligned with the aspirations of Angolan citizens.
Highlighting the need for unity, UNITA called on parliamentarians from all political parties to set aside partisan differences and prioritise national interests.
“The objective must be to hold truly free, fair, democratic, competitive, transparent and credible elections,” the parliamentary group emphasized.
The detailed debate on the electoral reforms is scheduled to run from 21 to 25 July, coordinated by the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee alongside the State Administration and Local Government Committee.
Deputies from all specialised working committees in the National Assembly are set to participate in the discussions.
As Angola seeks to consolidate its democracy, UNITA’s appeal reflects growing calls for inclusive political processes that bolster trust in electoral systems and ensure broad-based representation across the nation.
