The first Secretary of the MPLA in Luanda, Luís Nunes, faces a significant political challenge this Saturday as he seeks to overturn perceptions that the Cacuaco municipality remains a stronghold of the opposition UNITA party.
Widely promoted across social media, the MPLA’s mass political rally aims to showcase the party’s unity and reinforce support for the ruling party and its leader, João Lourenço.
Political analyst Adálio Pereira described the event as an opportunity for the MPLA to demonstrate strength and cohesion. He noted, however, that in the 2022 elections, UNITA secured a notable victory in the capital, highlighting the symbolic importance of the rally.
“This is a major test for the first Secretary in Luanda,” Pereira said. “The MPLA will attempt to counter the narrative and reaffirm its dominance in the city’s political landscape.”
Pereira also suggested that the rally would likely feature speeches emphasising party unity and defending the image of the MPLA President. “I expect a discourse of cohesion and strong support for the President,” he added.
The announcement of the rally was made last Tuesday on Rádio Correio da Kianda by Aguinaldo Oliveira, Secretary of the MPLA’s Department of Information and Propaganda in Luanda.
The upcoming event will not only test Luís Nunes’ political leadership but also signal the MPLA’s capacity to consolidate its influence in areas traditionally seen as opposition territory. Analysts argue that the success of the rally could have implications for the party’s strategy in future municipal and national elections, reinforcing the importance of Luanda as a central battleground in Angolan politics.
Observers will be watching closely to see if the MPLA can translate its organisational strength into tangible political momentum and counter the gains made by UNITA in recent years.
