Sharp divisions have emerged among legal and political analysts over how the ruling MPLA will select the head of its list — effectively its presidential candidate — for the 2027 elections, as debate intensifies within the country’s academic and political circles.
Speaking to Rádio Correio da Kianda, analyst Eurico Gonçalves revealed that while the profile of the party’s future candidate has been described by the MPLA leadership, no names have yet been disclosed. He noted that President João Lourenço has emphasized that the nominee will be “a well-educated young man” who can count on his personal backing as leader of the party.
However, legal expert David Mendes argues that the MPLA president does not have the authority to unilaterally impose his preferred candidate on either the Political Bureau or the Central Committee, which hold the ultimate responsibility for approving the party’s electoral list. Mendes stressed that, in the end, “voters can choose the future President of the Republic.”
Political scientists observing the process note that the VIII Extraordinary Congress, held last year, established that the Political Bureau would propose the candidate while the Central Committee would formally approve the selection. They predict that the eventual nominee will be “a discreet young man, able to continue the actions of the current tenant of the Presidential Palace.”
Mendes, meanwhile, expressed skepticism about prioritizing youth, pointing to examples of seasoned leaders without academic credentials who have successfully governed, including Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. “Young technicians are not good role models,” Mendes said, referencing a case at Angola’s General Tax Administration (AGT) in which highly educated employees were accused of embezzling state funds.
The internal debate over how the MPLA will select its standard-bearer reflects broader questions about generational change, governance style, and party unity as Angola moves toward the 2027 polls.
