Algeria has reported a 23% increase in non-hydrocarbon exports during the first seven months of 2025, driven largely by fertilizers, chemicals, and construction materials, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
Abdelatif El Houari, interim director in charge of export support mechanisms, highlighted the strong performance of chemical products, construction materials, and household appliances.
“These sectors demonstrate a regularity in export activity and confirm the government’s push for economic diversification,” he said.
Fertilizers and chemical exports topped the list at $1.5 billion, marking a 9% rise from the same period in 2024.
Construction materials and ceramics followed with $560 million (+11%), while the electrical and household appliances sector saw a remarkable 36% growth.
Other industries also showed gains, with the mining sector up 14% and the agro-food industry increasing by 13%.
Despite these encouraging figures, analysts caution that Algeria’s export growth remains heavily dependent on a limited number of sectors and exporters.
“The numbers reflect progress, but the industrial base for exports remains narrow,” said a local trade expert.
Geographically, Europe remained the primary destination for Algerian non-hydrocarbon exports, rising 21%, with Spain, Italy, and Brazil among the leading clients, recording additional shipments valued at $205 million, $162 million, and $156 million respectively.
Trade with Asia grew 31%, while exports to North and South America rose by 11%. By contrast, trade with African countries remained largely stagnant, highlighting persistent logistical, financial, and customs challenges despite the ambitions of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The ministry’s report underscores a cautious optimism: while Algeria is making measurable strides in diversifying its export portfolio, the country still faces structural obstacles that limit the broader impact of these gains.
Sustained industrial development and broader market integration will be crucial if non-hydrocarbon exports are to play a lasting role in Algeria’s economic growth.
