Algeria and Chad have taken steps to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the mining sector, following a high-level meeting held at the headquarters of Algerian mining group SONAREM on Saturday evening, September 13, 2025.
The discussions focused on developing a comprehensive roadmap for joint exploration, technical collaboration, and investment in mineral resources.
The Algerian delegation was led by SONAREM CEO Belkacem Soltani, while the Chadian delegation included Tahir Saleh, Deputy Director General of Customs, and Ibrahim Youssef, CEO of Sahara Air Lines.
The meeting also involved senior executives and branch managers from both sides.
Central to the discussions was the exchange of scientific and technical expertise in geological research, led by SONAREM’s ORGM branch, and the preparation of modern geological and mining maps.
Both parties agreed to launch training programmes, conduct field visits to Algerian mines, and implement practical missions to transfer Algerian mining expertise to Chad.
Officials emphasised support for Chad’s ongoing efforts to prepare economic and feasibility studies for mineral exploitation while opening opportunities for Chadian investments in Algeria.
These initiatives aim to leverage Algeria’s energy, water, and infrastructure advantages to create mutually beneficial outcomes.
During the meeting, SONAREM representatives shared insights from their experience managing over 80 mines producing minerals such as gold, phosphate, zinc, and marble, as well as supporting the national cement industry.
The Chadian delegation highlighted the efficiency of Algerian institutions, including ENOF, and expressed interest in adopting similar frameworks for managing mining data, regulating licenses, and operating mining enterprises.
At the conclusion of the discussions, Chad extended an official invitation for SONAREM to visit the country to explore its mining potential. Both parties agreed to draft a memorandum of understanding and a formal cooperation agreement. They also committed to continued coordination through bilateral meetings and videoconferencing to develop a detailed action plan with specific deadlines, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable management and development of African mineral resources.
