Algeria has taken a significant step in strengthening its national industrial landscape with the inauguration of the Ouled Bendamou industrial zone in Maghnia, located in the western province of Tlemcen.
Opened on Tuesday, July 29, this new business hub is poised to play a pivotal role in the country’s broader economic recovery strategy.
Spanning over 100 hectares, the Ouled Bendamou zone comprises 78 plots, of which 74 are earmarked for industrial investment projects, while four are reserved for support facilities.
Fully integrated with essential infrastructure networks, the site is designed to provide a conducive environment for diverse industrial enterprises to flourish, according to reports from algerie-eco.
This ambitious project reflects Algeria’s intention to decentralize its industrial activity by tapping into the potential of regions beyond its major cities. Maghnia, strategically positioned near the country’s western border, is expected to become an attractive hub for investors seeking access to both local and regional markets.
The launch of Ouled Bendamou is part of a wider national effort to expand Algeria’s industrial capacity. The government is actively encouraging the development of domestic production to reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imports and to stimulate job creation by attracting new businesses. In pursuit of these goals, authorities are stepping up initiatives to ease investor settlement and to ensure a well-organized working environment.
However, the challenge extends beyond infrastructure. “The real test lies in gradually transforming Algeria’s economy to rely more on strong local production,” experts say. Success depends on not only the availability of physical infrastructure but also on stringent oversight of project implementation, provision of essential public services, and efficient administrative support.
As Algeria embarks on this industrial expansion, the Ouled Bendamou zone represents both an opportunity and a test of the country’s ambition to modernize its economy and create sustainable growth outside its traditional urban centres.
