Algeria has unveiled an ambitious initiative to develop a bus engine powered by green hydrogen, a project aimed at transforming research and innovation into tangible industrial applications.
The launch was overseen by Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari, at the ministry’s headquarters on Sunday.
According to an official statement, the BAHU project seeks to convert conventional diesel-powered bus engines into green hydrogen engines, demonstrating the country’s commitment to clean energy and technological advancement.
“The project aims to valorize the results of scientific research and technological development by transforming innovation into manufacturable products,” the ministry said.
The initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions associated with diesel fuel while contributing significantly to Algeria’s energy sector. Ministry estimates indicate that the project could save up to 31% of local energy production, marking a substantial step towards national energy efficiency and sustainability.
The launch forms part of the government’s 2024–2029 programme, which focuses on achieving sustainable development goals and advancing Algeria’s energy transition.
By integrating green hydrogen technology into public transport, authorities hope to establish a model for cleaner mobility and foster the domestic manufacturing of advanced energy solutions.
The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Ministry of National Defence and the Central Directorate of Military Industries, alongside the Director General of Scientific Research and Technological Development, the director of the National Higher School of Renewable Energies, research centre directors, green hydrogen experts, and officials from the National Industrial Automotive Company.
Minister Baddari highlighted the project’s strategic potential, noting that it not only reduces emissions but also strengthens local technological capabilities.
By turning academic research into practical applications, Algeria aims to position itself at the forefront of green hydrogen innovation in the region.
The BAHU project represents a decisive move towards cleaner energy, the reduction of fossil fuel dependence, and the promotion of sustainable transport, reinforcing Algeria’s broader agenda for environmental stewardship and industrial modernisation.
