Algeria is preparing to take a major step in its technological development with the upcoming launch of the country’s first locally manufactured smartphone.
The project, announced by Algerian company Sacomi in collaboration with the Chinese tech giant ZTE Nubia, represents a strategic move to strengthen domestic industry and digital sovereignty.
“For Sacomi, this is more than a commercial launch,” company officials told Algeria360.
“It is a strong signal for the local industry, which is seeking to diversify and establish itself in strategic sectors.”
By producing smartphones domestically, Algeria aims to reduce its dependence on costly imports while asserting control over critical digital infrastructure.
The partnership also has a significant training dimension.
Sacomi highlighted that collaboration with ZTE Nubia will enable the development of local expertise, providing Algerian engineers and technicians with the skills needed to sustain the country’s technology sector.
Officials emphasized that this initiative could help cultivate a generation of young professionals capable of driving innovation in the digital economy.
Already known for producing televisions, washing machines, and air conditioners, Sacomi is now entering the highly competitive smartphone market.
Local manufacturing is expected to bring both economic and technological benefits: reducing the import bill, creating skilled jobs, and strengthening national digital security amid rising geopolitical concerns.
“Beyond the industrial and economic impact, this initiative reinforces Algeria’s ambition to be a regional leader in technology,” a Sacomi spokesperson said.
The company intends for the smartphone to serve as a cornerstone of its broader strategy to expand into innovative sectors while building sustainable local know-how.
Observers note that if the project succeeds, it could mark a milestone for the Algerian technology industry.
The alliance with an international partner like ZTE Nubia provides Sacomi with the expertise and resources needed to transform a national aspiration into a tangible achievement, demonstrating Algeria’s growing ambitions in high-tech manufacturing.
