In a symbolic meeting underscoring Algeria’s commitment to the preservation and promotion of the Arabic language, Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments Dr. Youssef Belmahdi met with the President of the Supreme Council for the Arabic Language, Dr. Saleh Belaid, on Monday.
The gathering, held at the ministry’s headquarters, was also attended by renowned linguist Dr. Mohamed Safi Mosteghanemi and several senior officials from the ministry’s central administration.
The discussions focused on strengthening institutional collaboration to serve the Arabic language and expand its influence across academic, religious, and public spheres.
Both parties explored mechanisms to enhance joint initiatives, aiming to deepen linguistic research and elevate Arabic’s role in scientific and cultural arenas.
During the meeting, Minister Belmahdi expressed particular admiration for Dr. Mosteghanemi’s illustrious academic journey and intellectual contributions to Arabic rhetoric and Qur’anic sciences.
“Dr. Mosteghanemi is one of the most prominent figures in the Arab world in the field of language and thought,” he said, praising the scholar’s analytical approach and his groundbreaking work in rhetorical interpretation of the Holy Quran. Belmahdi noted that his writings have become foundational texts for researchers and specialists alike.
Responding with gratitude, Dr. Mosteghanemi reaffirmed his commitment to advancing Arabic studies.
He voiced his readiness to deliver lectures and participate in academic forums at mosques, universities, and national training institutes for imams.
His continued engagement, he said, would contribute meaningfully to renewing Qur’anic interpretation and enriching Algeria’s intellectual landscape.
As the meeting drew to a close, both sides exchanged symbolic gifts in a gesture of cultural solidarity. Dr. Belaid presented the “Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language,” a landmark publication by the Supreme Council.
In return, the ministry offered a copy of the historic Rhodesian Qur’an, recently reprinted under the patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The encounter highlighted a shared vision for cultural cooperation and the pursuit of excellence in Arabic linguistic and religious scholarship, strengthening the institutional bonds that underpin Algeria’s efforts to safeguard its linguistic heritage.
