Algeria and Vietnam deepen economic ties in high-level bilateral talks

In a strategic move to strengthen long-standing diplomatic and economic relations, Algeria and Vietnam held high-level bilateral talks aimed at expanding cooperation across key sectors.
On the sidelines of Algeria’s formal accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, met with his Vietnamese counterpart, Mr. Bui Thanh Son, in Kuala Lumpur on July 10.
The talks underscored a mutual commitment to revitalizing historical ties and forging new partnerships in energy, industry, and agriculture.
A statement from Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that both parties reviewed the current state of Algerian-Vietnamese cooperation and agreed on the importance of fast-tracking negotiations on several draft agreements currently under discussion.
These agreements are expected to form the foundation for a new phase of collaboration in sectors deemed critical for both countries’ development.
“We are keen to see stronger, more diversified cooperation that reflects our deep-rooted friendship and the aspirations of our peoples,” Attaf emphasized during the meeting.
Both ministers agreed to prioritize sectors including energy, mining, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and industrial production—areas where bilateral synergies can produce immediate and lasting benefits.
The meeting also served as a preparatory step for future official engagements between the two nations, with both sides expressing readiness to elevate their diplomatic and trade relations to a strategic level.
Vietnam’s growing role in Southeast Asian economic dynamics and Algeria’s strategic positioning in North Africa were identified as key drivers for more robust interregional cooperation.
The talks signal a clear intent by Algiers and Hanoi to move beyond historical goodwill toward a results-driven partnership that responds to contemporary economic challenges and opportunities.
As both countries seek to diversify their international alliances, the Algerian-Vietnamese dialogue stands as a model for South-South cooperation in a shifting global landscape.
