Air Algérie has made history by placing Africa’s largest-ever order for ATR turboprop aircraft, signing a contract for 16 ATR 72-600 planes with the Franco-Italian manufacturer.
This move signals the Algerian national carrier’s bold ambition to dominate regional air travel while positioning Africa at the forefront of turboprop aviation development.
Since beginning its partnership with ATR in 2003, Air Algérie has steadily expanded its fleet with 15 ATR aircraft—12 ATR 72-500s and three ATR 72-600s—making it the continent’s leading customer.
The latest acquisition will nearly double that number, with deliveries scheduled from 2026 to 2028.
Designed for reliability and fuel efficiency in challenging climates, these aircraft are ideally suited to serve Algeria’s remote areas and enhance connectivity both nationally and across neighboring regions.
In addition to the fleet expansion, Air Algérie is investing in Africa’s first ATR 72-600 flight simulator, a strategic step to locally train pilots, reduce operational costs, and bolster technical independence.
This focus on strengthening domestic and interregional routes reflects the airline’s vision to become a key driver of African economic integration and could set a precedent for other carriers on the continent.
This latest order is part of a wider fleet renewal initiative launched years ago.
In May 2023, Air Algérie also ordered new-generation aircraft from Boeing and Airbus, including eight Boeing 737 MAX 9s, two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, five Airbus A330-900neos, and two Airbus A350-1000s.
These investments aim to expand the airline’s long-haul network connecting Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and North America while improving operational efficiency and environmental impact.
By simultaneously modernizing its regional and international fleets, Air Algérie pursues a dual mission: enhancing access to Algeria’s interior regions and strengthening its links with major global hubs.
This comprehensive strategy signals a new era of leadership for the airline and African aviation as a whole.
