The investment will focus on enhancing Morocco’s rail and airport infrastructure, positioning the country as a key player in hosting the global football event.
The 2030 World Cup will be co-hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, with opening matches taking place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay to mark the tournament’s centenary.
“This project will soon be presented for approval,” Adesina stated, emphasizing the strategic partnership between the AfDB and Morocco.
Morocco is the AfDB’s largest partner, with an active portfolio of 37 projects worth $3.6 billion (€3.42 billion).
These initiatives span critical sectors, including energy, water, sanitation, private sector development, and infrastructure.
In 2024 alone, the AfDB approved $1.5 billion (€1.43 billion) in funding for Morocco, underscoring its commitment to the country’s development agenda.
Adesina also held talks with Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, addressing youth employment and skills development, two areas the AfDB is prioritizing alongside Morocco.
The €650 million investment aims to enhance Morocco’s global competitiveness in infrastructure, a vital component of its World Cup readiness.
Improvements to railways and airports are expected to facilitate smooth operations during the tournament, ensuring Morocco’s ability to co-host the event on par with Spain and Portugal.
Morocco’s hosting role follows years of strategic investments in infrastructure, bolstered by AfDB support.
These efforts are designed not only for the World Cup but also to leave a lasting legacy for economic growth and connectivity across the region.
Adesina extended his gratitude to King Mohammed VI for his support of the Africa Investment Forum (AIF), a major event hosted in Rabat through December 6.
The forum underscores Morocco’s leadership in fostering investment and development across the continent.
As Morocco gears up for its World Cup responsibilities, the collaboration between the AfDB and the Moroccan government highlights the transformative potential of strategic investments in infrastructure and human capital.
