Gabon made a powerful statement at Expo 2025 Osaka as it celebrated its National Day under the banner “Our Forest, a Universal Engine that Saves Lives.”
The West African nation used the occasion to reaffirm its global leadership in environmental diplomacy and sustainable development.
The celebration took place as part of Gabon Week (23–30 July), bringing together government officials, international partners, diplomats, and business leaders to highlight the country’s commitment to combating climate change and promoting ecological sovereignty.
A Strategic Vision for Green Development
The official ceremony unfolded at Ray Garden in a display of high-level diplomacy and cultural pride. Representing President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, Vice-President of the Government Alexandre Barro Chambrier addressed the audience alongside a representative of the Japanese government. The speeches went beyond formal greetings, highlighting Gabon’s intention to lead with a development model that respects its unique ecosystems.
In his remarks, Chambrier emphasized Gabon’s key priorities: local transformation of natural resources, reinforced economic sovereignty, democratic renewal, and the emergence of a green industrial model aligned with climate era imperatives.
Spotlight on International Dialogue
A major highlight of the day was a press conference led by Chambrier at the Media Center. Addressing both Japanese and global media, he made a strong case for Gabon’s central role in global biodiversity and responsible investment initiatives.
He also underscored Gabon’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Japan in sectors like industry, infrastructure, education, and innovation, citing the critical role Gabonese forests play in fighting global warming.
A Cultural Showcase of Gabon’s Identity
Beyond the official events, the day featured a vibrant celebration of Gabonese identity. An institutional film showcased the nation’s natural and cultural wealth, accompanied by a symbolic dance performance inspired by photosynthesis—expressing the harmony between humans and nature.
Crowds of Japanese visitors joined a cultural parade through the Expo’s central plaza, followed by a formal lunch hosted by the Japanese government, marking a strengthening of bilateral diplomatic and economic ties.
The program also included visits to international pavilions, signings of cooperation agreements, and the announcement of winners from the “Amazing Gabon” competition, spotlighting local talent.
At the Women’s Pavilion, visitors explored the raphia industry, which blended tradition with innovation—a symbol of Gabon’s creative spirit.
The day concluded with a gala dinner at the Grand Prince Hotel, where guests enjoyed artistic performances and a unique Gabon-Japan fusion menu curated by Chef Anto.
A Clear Commitment to Shared Prosperity
In closing, Chambrier voiced Gabon’s desire to deepen its ties with Japan through shared growth and responsible investment.
“Le Gabon avance. Le Gabon se transforme. Ensemble, en partenaires et en amis, nous bâtirons un avenir commun, forgeant notre destin sur le socle du respect, de l’innovation et de la prospérité partagée,”
(“Gabon is moving forward. Gabon is transforming. Together, as partners and friends, we will build a shared future, forging our destiny on a foundation of respect, innovation, and shared prosperity.”)
Gabon’s presence at Expo 2025 Osaka was more than symbolic—it was a bold declaration of its place in the global drive toward ecological transition and sustainable development.
