Mauritanian PresidentJuly Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani is scheduled to chair the final weekly cabinet meeting on Tuesday, marking the beginning of the government’s annual summer recess, according to an announcement by the presidency.
The cabinet session, usually held on Wednesdays, was brought forward by a day to coincide with the start of the 15-day holiday period, which will be taken in rotation. Half of the ministers will begin their leave immediately, while the remaining officials will temporarily oversee their colleagues’ duties until mid-August.
The rotating arrangement is intended to ensure continuity in governance and administrative functions during the recess.
President Ghazouani has urged ministers and senior officials to spend their vacations within the country. He has publicly discouraged foreign travel, arguing that such actions send “negative messages” about the nation’s appeal and development.
“Vacations are not only for rest but also an opportunity to connect with the people and explore the beauty and potential of our country,” the President said, according to a source familiar with the cabinet’s agenda.
This session comes as the government prepares for a busy second half of the year, with several key policy initiatives, reforms, and infrastructure projects expected to move forward after the recess.
The President’s emphasis on domestic tourism aligns with broader national efforts to boost internal development and promote confidence in local amenities, as Mauritania continues to position itself as a stable and growing player in the Sahel region.
