Algeria’s groundbreaking experience in desert agriculture has been hailed as a beacon of innovation and sustainability, inspiring nations across Africa to explore similar pathways in the fight against food insecurity and climate change.
The praise came during a high-level side event at the second edition of the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS+4), held in Addis Ababa from July 27 to 29, 2025. The session, titled “Desert Agriculture in Algeria: Innovations for Food Security and Resilient Arid Ecosystems,” drew the attention of ministers, experts, and representatives from international organizations who described Algeria’s initiative as a replicable model for arid regions across the continent.
Speaking at the event, Algerian Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion Kamel Rezig detailed the strategic vision behind the country’s desert farming success.
“Algeria is working to transform its vast southern regions into a strategic agricultural hub,” Rezig said, attributing the vision to the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
He emphasized that the initiative is anchored in a comprehensive national policy focused on encouraging investment, streamlining procedures, and advancing scientific research in desert soil, water management, and climate adaptation.
But the minister was quick to point out that Algeria’s ambitions go beyond agricultural output. “Our goal is also to preserve environmental balance, combat desertification, and establish sustainable living patterns in vulnerable areas,” he stated, noting that these efforts contribute directly to regional development and social stability.
Rezig highlighted how Algeria’s reliance on local resources and modern technology has allowed the country to overcome climatic constraints and transform its deserts into productive landscapes.
He urged fellow African countries to draw lessons from Algeria’s journey as they shape their own food security strategies.
As Africa grapples with growing climate threats, Algeria’s desert agriculture initiative is being seen not only as a national success story, but also as a roadmap for resilience and innovation across the continent.
