In a groundbreaking initiative, Nana Akua Dokyiwaa Karikari, an upper-primary pupil at Mary Mother of Good Counsel School in Accra, is set to host Ghana’s first-ever Wind Summit focused on combating plastic pollution.
The event, scheduled for July 26, 2025, aims to empower young people with knowledge and practical skills to manage plastic waste and protect the environment.
Karikari, a dedicated member of the Captain Planet Foundation’s Planeteer Alliance, draws on her training from the foundation’s 2024 plastic policy workshop and an ongoing six-month boot camp.
She expressed her determination to inspire her peers, saying, “I want children to understand why throwing plastics everywhere is harmful and learn to repurpose them into useful items.”
The summit, organized at her school, will bring together 50 participants for hands-on sessions demonstrating how discarded plastics can be transformed into practical products such as bags and pencil cases.
“Preventing plastic from polluting streets, drains, and oceans requires collective action,” Karikari emphasized, highlighting the event’s wider environmental mission.
The Captain Planet Foundation, inspired by the popular 1990s environmental cartoon, is a global nonprofit dedicated to supporting youth-led ecological projects.
Its commitment to nurturing young environmental leaders perfectly complements Ghana’s broader sustainability efforts.
With registrations open via the Planeteer Alliance platform, the summit promises to be a beacon of youth-driven environmental activism in Ghana, showcasing how the next generation is taking the reins in the fight against plastic pollution.
