Ten people have been injured after a fire erupted in a ground-floor apartment of a residential building in the Activities Zone neighbourhood of Ain El Melh, in Algeria’s M’Sila province.
According to Civil Protection services, the blaze broke out early Sunday morning in the multi-storey building, which consists of a ground level and three upper floors.
Emergency teams were quickly dispatched to the scene, where they managed to bring the fire under control before it could spread to other parts of the structure.
Authorities confirmed that all ten individuals injured in the incident suffered primarily from smoke inhalation and shortness of breath.
First responders administered on-site treatment before transferring the victims to a local hospital for further care.
None of the injuries were reported as life-threatening.
“The swift intervention of Civil Protection teams prevented a far more serious disaster,” officials stated, highlighting that rapid containment efforts avoided significant structural damage and safeguarded the lives of other residents.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, and an investigation is currently underway to establish what sparked the incident.
Local officials have urged residents in the area to remain vigilant and adhere to fire safety measures, particularly during the summer months when household incidents are more frequent.
The incident has reignited concerns over safety protocols in residential buildings across Algeria, with calls for stricter enforcement of building codes and the installation of smoke detection systems in multi-storey complexes.
For now, Civil Protection services remain on alert, with additional teams deployed in M’Sila to monitor the situation and ensure no further risks emerge. The affected residents are expected to recover fully, though several remain under observation at the hospital.
