Heavy rains sweeping across Conakry and several regions of Guinea have prompted an urgent warning from the Guinean Road Safety Agency (AGUISER), which has cautioned drivers and pedestrians to avoid non-essential travel amid widespread flooding and hazardous road conditions.
In a statement released on Saturday, AGUISER, which operates under the Ministry of Transport, said that numerous a
reas of the capital are currently considered dangerous due to waterlogged roads, reduced visibility, fallen power lines, and slippery surfaces. Among the most affected zones are Cosa, Matoto, Bambéto, Dabondy, Sonfonia, and Lambanyi’s busy shopping centre, alongside critical crossings such as the Kobaya, Yattaya-Fossidet, and Nongo–Kiridi bridges.
The Sangoyah–Génie Militaire road, the underpass near the airport bridge, and Sig Madina have also been flagged as high-risk locations.
The agency added that the impact of the downpours extends beyond the capital, with the prefectures of Kindia, Mamou, Labé, and Kankan reporting similar disruptions to traffic and road safety.
“Road users must exercise maximum caution. Reduce speed, keep a safe distance, use dipped headlights, and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve,” AGUISER said. The agency also advised pedestrians to steer clear of standing water and gutters and to stay well away from any fallen cables.
AGUISER emphasised that it is monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with relevant authorities to minimise risks. “We call on everyone to demonstrate responsibility and vigilance to avoid accidents,” the statement added.
The warning comes as Conakry and much of Guinea grapple with seasonal heavy rainfall, which regularly leads to flooding and infrastructure strain in urban and rural areas alike.
Authorities have urged the public to follow official guidance and remain alert as adverse weather continues to disrupt daily life across the country.
