
President William Ruto has announced a series of new appointments to key parastatal boards, particularly within the health sector, replacing several officials whose terms were revoked. The changes were detailed in a gazette notice dated July 25, 2025.
Fredrick Namenya Were has been appointed as Chairperson of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council for a three-year term, replacing Stanley Khainga, whose appointment was rescinded.
Paul Ndung’u Kariuki was named Non-Executive Chairperson of the Kenya National Public Health Institute, also for a three-year term. His appointment replaces that of David Ndegwa Nyokabi, whose term was revoked.
Significant changes were made at the country’s largest referral hospital, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). President Ruto appointed Dr Abbas Gullet as Chairperson of the KNH Board of Directors, replacing Dr Samier Muravvej.
Muravvej has been reassigned as Non-Executive Chairperson of the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council Board, with his new term beginning on August 5, 2025, for a three-year period.
The appointments were made in line with various legal provisions, including the State Corporations Act, the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, and specific regulatory frameworks for each institution.
Beyond the health sector, Cabinet Secretaries also made several appointments across their respective dockets. Sports CS Salim Mvurya named Joseph Maina Njogu as a board member of the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya for a three-year term.
In the health docket, CS Aden Duale appointed Dr Dabar Abdi Maalim as Non-Executive Chairperson of the Nursing Council of Kenya Board, effective July 25, 2025, for three years.
Information, Communications and Digital Economy CS William Kabogo reappointed Joseph Maina Muiruri as Chairperson of the Media Council of Kenya, alongside Susan Karago, Timothy Wanyonyi Chetambe and Tabitha Mutemi, who will all serve for three years.
Education CS Julius Ogamba reappointed Cyrus Gituai as Non-Executive Chairperson of the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) for another three-year term, while Trade CS Lee Kinyanjui renewed Dorothy Chepkoech’s term as a board member of the Export Processing Zones Authority.
Additional appointments include Brynes Mbogo to the National Youth Service Council by Public Service CS Geoffrey Ruku, and the reappointment of Simon Nganga, Hassan Ahamednur Baricha, Jared Mekenye Ongwae and Lydia Boke Marwa to the Water Resources Authority Board by Water CS Eric Muuga.
In the agriculture sector, CS Mutahi Kagwe appointed Jonah Marindich to the National Cereals and Produce Board for a three-year term, effective July 25, 2025.
These appointments mark a significant reshuffle across multiple sectors, as the government seeks to strengthen institutional leadership and oversight.
