In a decisive move to strengthen social harmony and good governance, the Governor of Niger’s Maradi region, Police Controller General Mamane Issoufou, inaugurated an awareness caravan focused on governance and social cohesion on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, in Guidan Roumdji.
This initiative aims to raise public awareness about conflict prevention and management, while fostering ideas to maintain lasting stability and peace across both urban and rural communities in the Maradi region.
At the launch event, Governor Issoufou praised the steadfast commitment of President Army General Abdourahamane Tiani and Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, Minister of Economy and Finance, in their ongoing pursuit of social tranquility and the well-being of Niger’s people.
“Security in the Maradi region appears to be under control today thanks to government efforts and the cooperation of peace stakeholders,” he stated.
“This situation must be sustained over time to create the socio-economic and political environment needed to prevent misunderstandings between public authorities and unemployed youth—who remain vulnerable to recruitment by terrorist groups and criminal gangs.”
Governor Issoufou emphasized the caravan’s role as a platform where all peace actors and social cohesion champions can unite to discuss and reinforce the enduring bonds that connect their communities.
He also welcomed the recent appointment of Managing Directors in municipalities, which has enhanced participatory governance and fostered strong collaboration between decentralized administrative authorities and local leaders.
Highlighting the vital influence of traditional chiefs and religious leaders, he said, “Chieftaincy and religion are complementary pillars safeguarding our values of solidarity, tolerance, and love for one another.
They are guarantors of social cohesion and help establish peace within communities.”
The governor underscored that these leaders should focus on raising awareness about peace, tolerance, conflict prevention through traditional values, civic duties, respect for laws, and the promotion of fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.
Acknowledging grassroots efforts, he noted that young people, women, and community leaders across Maradi have launched numerous initiatives to uphold peace and good governance.
As Niger continues to navigate complex social challenges, this awareness caravan signals a hopeful step towards inclusive dialogue and sustainable peace for the Maradi region and beyond.
