Chadian forces repel Boko Haram assault in Lake Chad operation
Troops from the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Sector 2, stationed on Koulfoua Island in the Lake Chad region, have successfully repelled a coordinated assault by Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants, neutralizing several attackers in a decisive counteroffensive.
According to a statement released by the MNJTF, the early morning assault on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, targeted the military base at Koulfoua Island. However, the forces, equipped with a pre-planned tactical response, mounted a swift and effective defense.
Intense artillery fire and coordinated bombardments were used to repel the assault, leading to the elimination of six terrorists, including a senior Boko Haram commander identified as Amir Dumkei.
The MNJTF also recovered nine AK-47 rifles and a substantial cache of ammunition from the site of the clash.
“The bravery and precision of our forces in neutralizing this threat are commendable,” said Major General Godwin Mutkut, Force Commander of the MNJTF. “Their commitment to restoring peace in the Lake Chad Basin remains unwavering.”
Following the attack, MNJTF troops launched a pursuit operation targeting the remaining insurgents, many of whom are believed to have fled with gunshot wounds. Search operations are currently underway to secure the broader area and prevent further incursions.
The MNJTF’s response highlights the coalition’s ongoing resolve to dismantle terrorist networks and safeguard civilian populations across the Lake Chad Basin. The force, comprising troops from Chad, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Niger, continues to conduct joint operations aimed at suppressing violent extremism in the region.
This latest engagement underlines the enduring threat posed by extremist groups, even as regional forces continue to register strategic victories in the fight against insurgency.
