More than 18,000 students from underprivileged backgrounds in Makueni County are set to benefit from a major bursary initiative following the disbursement of education funds amounting to KSh 114.9 million.
The announcement was made by Japheth Mang’oka, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for ICT, Education, and Internship, during a cheque distribution ceremony held at Green Park in Wote town on Monday.
“The bursaries will be distributed through the Ward Administrators in all the 30 wards across the county. We target needy and deserving students to support their education.
The initiative underscores the county government’s commitment to promote access to education for all,” said Mang’oka.
The allocation aims to assist a total of 18,179 students across various educational institutions in the county, reinforcing Makueni’s broader agenda to improve access to quality education and reduce school dropout rates.
The cheques were handed over to the Ward Administrators, who are responsible for ensuring their distribution reaches the grassroots level, targeting families most in need of support.
This decentralized approach is intended to enhance transparency and ensure the bursaries are received promptly by deserving students.
Also in attendance at the ceremony were Chief Officer Irene Makau, several senior officials from the county government, and members of the public.
The bursary programme is part of a continued effort by the Makueni County Government to uplift the education sector through financial aid, especially for students facing economic hardship.
With rising education costs placing increased pressure on households, county officials emphasized that the support would play a vital role in retaining students in school and improving academic performance across the region.
Local residents praised the county for the timely intervention, which many said was critical in supporting children from marginalized communities to achieve their educational dreams.
