Senegal marked a significant milestone on Monday with the signing of the third tripartite agreement between Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD), Gaston Berger University (UGB), and the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS).
The ceremony took place in the UCAD conference hall under the guidance of Professor Idrissa Ly, Vice-Rector responsible for research and partnerships.
This renewed accord deepens a collaboration that began in 2009, uniting researchers across diverse fields such as health, environment, and social sciences.
The partnership’s evolution from an international joint unit to an internationally recognized research laboratory (IRL) has fostered joint scientific projects, enhancing Senegal’s research landscape.
A cornerstone of this cooperation has been the annual summer universities held in Widou Thiengoly.
These gatherings not only facilitate knowledge exchange but also involve local communities in identifying research priorities and applying findings in practical, impactful ways.
The newly signed agreement commits to sustaining and expanding the laboratory’s activities, underscoring the enduring importance of collaboration among these institutions.
Professor Mamadou Abdoul Diop, representing UGB’s Rector, praised the partnership’s role in boosting scientific innovation and education in Senegal while strengthening ties between Senegalese academia and the CNRS.
Echoing this sentiment, the CNRS Director of Human Resources highlighted the value of interdisciplinary and cross-sector approaches. She emphasized that integrating training with research remains a top priority for the CNRS.
After 15 years of fruitful cooperation, this agreement ushers the collaboration into a new chapter, honoring the visionary founders who laid the groundwork for this ambitious and pioneering alliance.
