Guinea-Bissau emerges from turmoil as president Embaló heads to U.S. for high-level talks

President Umaro Sissoco Embaló declared that Guinea-Bissau has transitioned from “a state of disorder to a real state” as he departed for the United States on Monday for a high-level meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Speaking at Osvaldo Vieira International Airport in Bissau, President Embaló underscored the symbolic and strategic importance of the visit, which is part of a broader summit scheduled from July 9 to 11 focused on promoting private investment, enhancing security cooperation, and increasing African access to strategic resources.
“Guinea-Bissau has now gone from a state of disorder to a real state,” Embaló told journalists, reflecting on the country’s growing stability and international recognition.
“The Americans do not invite a state they nicknamed ‘Nhafú Nhafú,’” he added, using the colloquial term once associated with Guinea-Bissau’s former reputation for instability and fragmented governance.
The president emphasized that the upcoming discussions in the U.S. would be an opportunity to renew long-dormant development and financial partnerships.
“It has been a long time since Guinea-Bissau benefited from funding from the United States of America, like other countries,” Embaló noted, calling the visit “a great opportunity for the country.”
In a significant diplomatic development, President Embaló confirmed that preparations are underway for the reopening of the U.S. embassy in Bissau, which had been closed for years amid political volatility.
“Everything is already underway,” he said.
“One of the conditions they proposed to us is that we reopen our embassy. As you know, America has a criterion when opening its embassies, which is to build them all in the same way for security reasons.”
He indicated that the project for the U.S. diplomatic mission’s reopening in Bissau is actively progressing, marking a symbolic turning point in bilateral relations.
The summit in the U.S., which will gather a number of African heads of state, aims to foster deeper economic ties and bolster regional security frameworks.
For Embaló, it represents not only a personal milestone but also a declaration of Guinea-Bissau’s new chapter on the global stage.
