Ghanaian boxing is poised for a thrilling matchup as rising prospect Abubakar Kamoko (4-0) challenges seasoned contender Jonathan Mbanugu (15-1-1) to a professional bout that promises to electrify local fans and test both fighters’ credentials on the national stage.
Kamoko, the undefeated son of legendary boxer Braimah Kamoko, popularly known as Bukom Banku, issued the challenge through official channels, igniting widespread interest across the country’s boxing community.
The callout swiftly drew a response from Mbanugu’s camp, with his manager Gordon Frimpong confirming their acceptance and readiness to face the younger Kamoko in the ring.
“We accept the challenge,” said Frimpong, signalling their intent to meet the rising star head-on.
Though no date or venue has been confirmed, the fight is expected to be organized by Legacy Rise Sports, the promotional outfit behind the successful “Battle of the Beasts” event held in Accra this past June. The company has hinted at a December 2025 return, raising speculation that the Kamoko-Mbanugu clash could headline the card.
For Kamoko, the fight would mark a significant step up in competition. While the 22-year-old has impressed with four straight victories since turning professional, Mbanugu brings a wealth of experience, having notched 15 wins from 17 bouts.
Analysts view the bout as a pivotal test for Kamoko, whose early performances have drawn comparisons to his father’s explosive rise.
Mbanugu, meanwhile, will be seeking to reassert his dominance in the division following a recent draw and is unlikely to underestimate the hungry challenger from Bukom.
As anticipation builds, fans and pundits alike are hopeful the matchup will revive interest in Ghanaian boxing’s domestic scene, long dominated by calls for more competitive all-local bouts.
With both fighters now publicly committed, attention turns to the promoters to deliver what could be one of the most compelling national contests of the year.
