A growing legal dispute in Senegal is placing lawmaker Farba Ngom at the centre of a national debate, as his request for provisional release on health grounds faces scrutiny from prosecutors, medical experts, and state authorities.
Detained amid an ongoing investigation by the Financial Division, the MP’s future now lies in the hands of a judge tasked with weighing complex legal and humanitarian concerns.
Ngom, a prominent figure in Senegalese politics, has been seeking release from detention, citing deteriorating health.
However, state authorities appear unconvinced. As early as April, the State Judicial Agent firmly rejected an initial request, signalling a tough stance in what many consider a politically sensitive affair.
The rejection, first reported by Libération, suggested that the state viewed the justifications provided as insufficient to warrant release—regardless of Ngom’s stature.
The debate reignited in mid-May with the submission of a medical report by Professor Alassane Mbaye.
Commissioned by the court, the report indicated that Ngom’s health condition was “incompatible with current conditions of detention.” While this could have strengthened the case for release, it instead sparked a call for a second opinion.
The Financial Prosecutor’s Office, wary of potential misuse of health claims as a legal loophole, requested an independent counter-expertise to verify the findings.
