In a display of diplomatic warmth and shared values, the Canadian Embassy in Burkina Faso marked Canada’s National Day with an official ceremony in Ouagadougou on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
The celebration, held ahead of the official July 1st date, brought together dignitaries, including Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, to honour more than six decades of strong bilateral relations.
As national anthems of both countries echoed through the venue, attendees observed a solemn moment of reflection for victims of terrorism in Burkina Faso.
Canadian Ambassador Tina Guthrie addressed the gathering, expressing gratitude for the long-standing collaboration between the two nations.
“This is a commitment to diversity and inclusion, democracy and human rights, and mutually beneficial cooperation,” said Ambassador Guthrie, emphasizing the shared principles that have guided Canada and Burkina Faso since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1962.
Raising a toast with Foreign Minister Jean-Marie Karamoko Traoré, Guthrie underscored Canada’s extensive involvement in Burkina Faso’s development. She highlighted Canadian contributions across a range of sectors, including humanitarian aid, education, health, and economic growth.
“In northern Burkina Faso, Canada is helping to improve access to healthcare in conflict-affected areas.
A mobile clinic under one of our projects has delivered over 88,000 medical consultations to vulnerable communities, with more than 64,000 benefiting women and girls,” Guthrie stated.
She also noted that nearly 1,000 Burkinabè students are currently enrolled in Canadian universities.
Canada’s presence in the mining sector was also spotlighted.
The ambassador affirmed the role of Canadian mining companies in advancing sustainable development.
“Canadian mining firms remain leaders in responsible practices, community investment, environmental protection, local procurement, and Burkinabè employment,” she said.
Minister Traoré extended his congratulations and best wishes to the Canadian people on behalf of the Burkinabè government.
He praised Canada’s contributions to key areas such as education, democratic governance, and women’s empowerment.
“Canada’s support for microfinance has enabled Burkina Faso to make significant progress in financial inclusion, allowing marginalized populations access to banking services,” he said.
As the evening unfolded with symbolic gestures of unity and shared vision, both nations reaffirmed their dedication to a partnership rooted in respect, progress, and common purpose.
