Eritreans worldwide honour fallen heroes with donations and pledges on martyrs day

Eritrean communities around the world came together on 25 June to commemorate Martyrs Day, paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s independence and sovereignty.
From Europe to Africa and the United States, nationals marked the solemn occasion with emotional ceremonies, symbolic acts of remembrance, and generous financial contributions to support families of martyrs.
In South Africa, Eritrean nationals organized commemorative gatherings across several cities, collectively raising 36,510 Rand for the Martyrs Trust Fund.
An additional 16,000 Rand was pledged, while three individuals committed to supporting one martyr’s family each.
Eritreans living in Italy demonstrated their continued dedication to the cause, contributing 39,000 Euros and expressing a firm resolve to honour the legacy of the fallen.
“We are ready to uphold the trust of the martyrs,” one community representative said, echoing a sentiment felt across the diaspora.
In France, Eritrean communities hosted a range of memorial events, highlighting the courage of those who gave their lives for freedom.
These ceremonies included moments of reflection, cultural tributes, and financial donations to the Martyrs Trust Fund.
A commemorative event held in the Netherlands saw over 53,000 Euros raised, which will go toward both the Martyrs Trust Fund and direct support for 24 martyr families.
The outpouring of generosity underscored a shared commitment to ensuring that the sacrifices of the past are never forgotten.
In the United States, Eritrean nationals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Cincinnati, Ohio, also participated in Martyrs Day events.
In Harrisburg, 3,055 US dollars were collected to aid the families of the fallen.
Meanwhile, Eritrean communities in Belgium, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe marked the day with candlelight vigils and walkathons, offering silent tributes to the heroes of Eritrea’s liberation struggle.
From every corner of the globe, the Eritrean diaspora reaffirmed their unity and unwavering dedication to preserving the memory and legacy of the martyrs who laid down their lives for their homeland.
