Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Ben Jamaa, has sounded the alarm over Libya’s deteriorating situation, calling for renewed dialogue and an immediate halt to foreign meddling during a recent Security Council session.
Speaking on behalf of the A3+ group—which includes Algeria, Guyana, Somalia, and Sierra Leone—Ben Jamaa highlighted years of political paralysis that have gripped Libya, warning that the fragile state of affairs has worsened significantly.
“We warned two months ago of the fragility of the situation in Libya, which is worsening,” he said. “We meet today against the backdrop of alarming developments in the capital, Tripoli, following renewed armed clashes.”
Ben Jamaa stressed that these clashes threaten regional stability and emphasized the urgent need for peaceful resolution through inclusive dialogue. “We called for an end to all armed activity outside the legal framework,” he stated.
The Algerian diplomat also welcomed recent efforts by the Libyan Presidential Council aimed at de-escalating tensions, praising moves to establish a truce committee and impose restrictions on armed movements in Tripoli.
Echoing the group’s wider demands, Ben Jamaa urged the organization of “free and fair national elections supported by the United Nations that would lead to the unification of Libya’s institutions.”
On the economic front, he voiced deep concern about the country’s spiraling crisis, worsened by the lack of a unified budget and ineffective governance.
Concluding his remarks, Ben Jamaa insisted on the urgent need to “cease all forms of foreign interference in Libyan affairs and the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all foreign fighters and mercenaries from Libyan territory.”
He warned that recent clashes in the border triangle between Libya, Sudan, and Egypt highlight the danger of the conflict escalating into a broader proxy war, posing a serious threat to regional peace.
