Angolan international Núrio Fortuna is set to embark on a new chapter in his football career after signing with Greek side Ovolo, following a challenging season marred by injuries in Belgium.
The 30-year-old left-back, who holds the number 2 jersey for Angola’s national team, aims to reignite his form with the modest Greek club after a disappointing spell with KAA Gent.
Fortuna spent five seasons at KAA Gent, a club that finished sixth in the Belgian top flight this year and missed out on European qualification.
His time at the club was increasingly limited, primarily due to recurring injuries that curtailed his contributions on the pitch.
Since joining Gent in 2020, he has made just 140 appearances—a figure that reflects the fitness struggles he has battled throughout his tenure.
Commenting on the move, sports analyst Jedílson da Silva told Correio da Kianda, “Professionally, he is a player who is growing in his own career, although late, but it is always very good to gain experience from other clubs in old Europe.”
He added, “Last season, he was the KAA Gent player who suffered the most injuries.
He played 11 games, was also loaned out to a French club and made three appearances for the national team, but he really managed to prove his worth on the pitch.”
Jedílson acknowledged the challenges Fortuna may face adapting to Greek football: “It won’t be easy for him to adapt to Greek football, given that he will have to face the language barrier, the country’s climate and the change from the Belgian football environment to the Greek one.”
Despite the hurdles, Fortuna’s move is seen as a strategic opportunity to reset his career.
With experience spanning top-flight clubs in Portugal (Sporting de Braga), Cyprus (AEL Limassol), and Belgium (Sporting Charleroi and KAA Gent), Fortuna brings a wealth of European football experience that could prove valuable in the Greek Super League.
As he joins Ovolo, Fortuna remains determined to reclaim his form and reestablish himself as a dependable figure for both club and country.
