In a continent often grappling with political unrest, armed conflict, and institutional instability, a select group of African nations is quietly charting a path of peace and resilience.
From civil wars to extremist insurgencies, much of Africa has faced significant turbulence in recent years.
Yet amid these challenges, some countries have emerged as models of calm, offering hope for a more stable future.
According to the Global Peace Index 2025, compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace, ten African countries have distinguished themselves as the continent’s most peaceful.
The index, which assesses 163 nations and territories using 23 indicators—from crime rates and political stability to military expenditure and ongoing conflict—offers a rare spotlight on the bright spots in Africa’s complex security landscape.
Leading the way is Mauritius, the Indian Ocean island nation, with a Global Peace Index score of 1.586, earning it the top spot in Africa and 26th globally.
With low crime, political tranquility, and minimal internal tensions, Mauritius continues to stand out as a beacon of stability in the region.
In second place is Botswana, long known for its enduring democracy and strong governance.
Despite its landlocked position and proximity to regions plagued by illicit trafficking and migration, Botswana maintains a peaceful climate anchored in institutional strength.
Namibia follows closely, with its wide-open desert landscapes mirroring a calm societal atmosphere.
Gambia, once burdened by authoritarian rule, has seen a political renaissance focused on reconciliation and reform.
The list also includes Sierra Leone and Madagascar, two nations with histories of civil unrest but whose recent trajectories point toward healing and growth.
Ghana, a consistent advocate for democratic values and a respected regional mediator, remains a pillar of West African peace.
Zambia, buoyed by stable political transitions, and Senegal, noted for its deep-rooted culture of social dialogue, further reinforce the continent’s quiet march toward peaceful governance.
Rounding out the top ten is Liberia, a nation still recovering from civil war but steadily reinforcing its institutions and security partnerships.
